As cliché as it is, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” At the age of 23, I was left as a single mom to 2 young children and a military widow, with no clue in the world what to do with my life. My name is Genesa Richards and I am the widow of SPC David J. Ramsey, US ARMY.
Working as a personal banker for years leading up to my husband’s death, it was the last thing I wanted to do after being widowed. The daily reminder that that wasn’t my life anymore, it was apart of my past and a reminder that my husband died. Not sure where to go next in life, I decided to go back to college. After several courses in Psychology and Photography, I decided that that was who I wanted to be. I bought my first digital SLR camera and started with free photo sessions for friends and family. Shot my first wedding in December 2007 and then a handful the following years. I also became a volunteer with the non-profit, Remembering the Brave, after attending a ceremony in late 2008.
Life happened and more tragedy struck my life in early 2009, leaving me at rock bottom, not wanting to live another day. I had been at the same job as retail management for about a year and was just miserable.
January 1, 2010, I found light at the end of my tunnel. I met an amazing man, Brian, who gave me hope again. February 2011, we welcomed a little girl to our family and I quit my retail job in hopes that my photography business would pick up and thrive. Worked like a madman through 2011 and in summer 2012, I had 3 consecutive months of full calendars and no availability. By September 2012, I had 12 weddings booked for the next year, as well as planning my own destination wedding, to marry my best friend.
I have persevered through the most difficult times one could experience in several lifetimes. Passion and drive allowed me to achieve a dream of being a successful business owner and well-respected photographer. I am no longer defined as only being Genesa, the military widow of David. I am now Genesa, Wedding Photographer, fiancé to SSGT Brian Boosz and mommy to 3 beautiful children, as well as an active volunteer with the American Widow Project.
