My name is Shenneth Canegata and I live in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Once upon a time I reveled in the fact that I was surrounded by love; the kind of love that made me feel like I was always on cloud nine (most of the time!). I had a dynamic, loving, supportive family and we were nicknamed “The Four Musketeers.” I was super proud of “us.” We were a team. We did everything as a team. My husband’s slogan was always, “Team work makes the dream work.” We spent a lot of time together and we just were, you know.
On January 20, 2007, “The Four Musketeers” lost one; the most vital part of who we were – LTC David C. Canegata III. The Blackhawk he was on was hit when insurgents fired on it and all twelve on board perished.
No matter what thoughts occupy your mind when your husband is deployed, you are never prepared for news like that; NEVER. It hit like a ton of bricks!!! My two children and I, then 15 and 10, have been on a journey since then: learning how to smile again, how to laugh again, how to survive, how to stay alive, how to thrive, and just how to live. It has been a journey filled with incredible highs and lows, but we have discovered that we are stronger than we ever knew. I have discovered that I am stronger than I ever knew before. Somehow I found the courage not to just merely exist, but to choose to truly “live.” “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option left.” – Author Unknown
